Baitfighter at Playnation Games

Since we last visited the fresh new look of M&M Games, Playnation Games have been busting a move with lots of events. Utilising their 2nd floor as the Games room, you can pay £2,50 to play retro games all evening or enter Card game tourneys or play casuals, streetpass whatever your heart desires.

If there are events going on for £2.50 you get the opportunity to share your passion for games in a big community. Their latest collaboration features youtube sensation Baitstaition for Baitfighter at Playnation Games. The lads behind this challenge gamers to instant knock out leaving with their dignity in tact or with bragging rights over all.

Upon arriving around 7.15pm all the tournament spaces had been filled already, I could hear a cheering crowd from upstairs, this event had attracted lots of the local gamers to try their skills against the hyped up Bait-fighters.

Confirmed games included:

Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade edition (XBox 360)
Street Fighter: The movie (playing on XBox)
Mortal Kombat 3: SNES
Super Smash Bros. (GC or N64 tbc)
Street of Rage 2 - vs. and co-op (Megadrive)
WWF Smackdown 2 (PSX)
WWF No Mercy (N64)

They also had Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and 3, 3rd Strike (online edition) and BlazBlue:CF for play after the main tournament, plus any other games Playnation could magic up.

You were welcome to bring your own sticks/Pads, there will be a couple floating around for use, but if you don't bring your own, you get what you're given and no moaning about equipment, if you lose take it like a man. A gallery for Perfected losers was made so everyone could have their time to shine and everyone had a  lot of fun.

Not being a Streetfighter fan I enjoyed my luck at Soul Caliber on Dreamcast, and who is my challenger? Non other than Foolish Overloard aka Tom from Anime Picks. He put up a good fight but no one could defeat my Xianghua and Lizard man team.

Gamerdisco ft IGN: 6th March

Gamerdisco is becoming a regular hang out for me and my gaming buddies. Free entry into a den of games, friendly atmosphere, drinking and prizes.

A truly social video gaming event for those who would like to play solitary. Get up and and make an event of it with multi-screen projected gaming from old skool Nintendo. GamerDisco at Book Club provides an adult space for arcade lovers and fans of video games.

This time there was a queue outside the entrance to the light-bulb en-clustered domain. Seems I'm not the only regular attending and it's true, the majority of people attending  are part of a community.

The variety of attendees span from amateur noobs, to tourney pros looking for practice or to score prizes. Last time one of my friends came 2nd in the Street Fighter tourney and won a steam code for Jet Set Radio (courtesy of IGN). Playable games were: Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Mario Kart, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom and Streetfighter x Tekken.

The music has changed vastly due to DJ 'Jet Set' Rory playing some pop tunes in 8-bit forms: Riding Dirty, Goldigga and Pokemon Remix, which the audience and even staff were bopping to.

The only disappointment to the night was the lack of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 'till late into the night and no Tekken at all. I am hoping there will be a bit more variety next time and perhaps more games previews, as at the last event they had another room dedicated to All Stars Battle Royale which was a real crowd pleaser.

Overall a great night out for students, people on a budget or people who need to let off some steam.

Mortal Kombat: the origins of TOASTY

The first ever 'toasty' encounter I saw was Dan's purple shhirt from MK3 on the Sega Saturn. To this day I always remember it as 'Gutted'

So this morning I used facebook after a while and I was looking through the news feed, after various photos of cute kittens i wanted to squish in my palm, came across the simple status of:

 'Streetfighter is crap'


Lol not a big thing to most people but to a gamer that's deep! Lol if I'd made such a bold statement I'd be cussed down in seconds. This guy was lucky, 1 like and no comments, I went ahead to post:

'lol your friends must really love not to beat you down for that statement ;)'

'Lol they can bring it I'll show them the way in tekken an mortal komat.'

XD I couldn't have agreed anymore!  This made me search for the famous MK trash talk of 'Gutted' which i realised didn't exsist and it actually called 'Toasty' say whhhhattt? My childhood was a lie? A mish mash of screams, grunts and punches? A LIE! (Lol I'll explain why it's called 'toasty' later.)

Comparing fighting games: Tekken uses more skill;  and well Mortal Kombat IS JOKES. I'm not a fan of the 2D fighting style BUT MK 'S FATALITIES IS ENOUGH and the added bonus of Toasty always brightened up a crappy for me. Ps. I always thought back from when i buttoned bashed on my Sega Saturn that the dude said 'Gutted' another legend of Aisha.

To get Dan to say toasty in the original games you had to preform a dirty vicious uper cut, in The origin of Toasty is pure trash talk between Dan and Ed and well Dan would say 'I predict Toat' as in 'your toast' (God bless Americans!) and this eventually turned in 'TOASTY!' 'Toasty' has been featured inj MK 2, MK3, MK 4 (Dan Forden would say "Toasty 3D!"), Deadly Alliance(failing a minigame gained the taunt of"Toasty!"), Shaolin Monks, Deception, Chess Kombat and Mortal Kombat (2011) whereForden sports a gray tshirt with a slice of toast with butter superimposed on it.

Pop Culture

The Toasty entered into the internet realm in 2011 by the website Toasty It in which you can pay homage to your favorite website in true Mortal Kombat II style. Simply by entering in the URL of the desired website, Dan Forden will grace the bottom corner of the chosen website singing that everlasting tune! This timely Easter egg has an Easter egg of it's own in which clicking on Dan Forden's image will start Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" with randomized MK characters breaking out in a flash dance. Reloading the page and clicking on Dan Forden's image will release a new MK character.
