Review: Dragon Ball Z: EXTREME BUTODEN

The caps lock in the title was to signify the manly screams of the Dragon Ball franchise. If you are new to the DB series then you have missed out on a long history of shounen manga spanning over 325 chapters which was then adapted into anime (dubbed into several territories over the world) and then into  games and animated movies.

The story follows  a child on earth is found to have incredible strength and later grows up has a family and searches for the mysterious Dragon Balls which bring your wishes to life. Later, aliens arrive and believe his is a missing member of an alien race and Goku is one of a rare breed of Saiyans.  Dragon Ball Z follows Goku’s adult life and his son Gohan and his other companions.

Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden is set at the start of the DBZ saga which follows the direct anime adaptation you may have watched on TV many years ago. It is in the form of a 2D fighting game.

Story mode takes you through the DBZ story where you play as Goku and and engage with the villains and fight one round which dictates the story.  The moves are pretty straight forward and are virtually the same for every character except signature moves for certain characters. It’s almost impossible to lose whilst playing as Goku. Later in the game you switch characters and become young Gohan which makes things tricky.

All in all with the complete story mode including Hercule’s long winded story within , it can take up to 45 minutes to complete and then you have unlocked the majority of the game options.

You can also use old cheat codes from the snes days including unlocking Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Vegeta, players can enter the following code on the title screen: XAB↓→↑YAR↓→↑A→R.

In total there are 25 playable characters and a few more available in Z-Assist that you choose ton come in to battle to help fight. The list includes Chi Chi, Bulma, Launch but the list does not include any Super Saiyan forms even have the Super Saiyan 3 versions. In comparison you have more assist character to choose from which seems to be rather odd.

Adventure mode is a bit more experimental as you can choose different characters and change the story but it is a but more technical than the story mode as you have conditions to meet.

You also have 1v1 mode and you can mix up your team which is standard for a fighting game. The best way to compare it is to Street Fighter, where you use your specials according to the character but proceed to button bash and occasionally if you jump up you are flying which doesn’t change the fighting style at all.

Review: Disgaea 4

Disgaea returns with a new bunch of demons on a quest to save the reputation of the lowly Prinnies...? Dood what? So we enter another parallel Neverworld this time inhabiting Valvatorez the great. Or so we're told. Loyal fans to the series will see this as the 4th available on PS3 and PS Vita. We are greeted with a new set of classes, options and cast of demons.

The story gripped me at once, a hero who respects Prinnies? What's going on here, is he soft in the head. Apparently Valvatorez or Lord Val as most call him is banished to be a Pruinny Instructor. A totaly underdog of the demon world but with a past of once greatness. This greatness has been long forgotten since he stopped drinking blood due to a promise. A promise made to a human which in fact drained him of most of his powers. He is now stuck in a shrimpy body and obsessed with sardines which he feasts on instead of blood.

Alongside the law abiding Lord Val we have his loyal servent Fenrich who is pretty mean and bad ass, did I mention he was a werewolf too? Twilight resonances are appearing to me but nope there is no glitter just relentless trolling and beats. Whilst the Prinnies are slandered to be the cause of the receding death rates to Celestia and the Netherworld, the pair go on a journey and come across a great rag tag bunch. One of my least favorite recurring characters holds a lead role in this game, Emiziel. The president of the Netherworld's son, a right 'rascal' and pain in the butt. After much leveling you realise he has the second best magic in the game. The best magic is owned by Desco a big boss who gets whooped by the team and strives to over throw the couruptment to become the ultimate big boss. Also tentacles.

The game cleverly adds hints into the conversations on how to improve your characters like 'chara world' this was an interesting touch but I very quickly lost interest. For you see instead of the 'item world' concept where you clear out all the enemies, in char world you are surrounded by geo cubes that you must destroy to obtain the level ups and character bonuses. This takes a VERY LONG time to do. I found it was really worth while to do for the mages to unlock great spells and evilities. Otherwise it's a very tedious procedure for every character.

Within the stats demon, you can see what you have achieved ie. what percentage of rare items you collected, enemies killed, levels reincarnated (for Lord Val) which is handy for unlocking all the ending and through that you do get the indication of a hidden ending. *Squuueee* sorry ignore my inner fan girl. You can also re watch scenes and art from the game which is for the hardcore fans.

They also bring up the option of opening the 'Cave of Ordeals' early in the game for you to hideously fail at but aspire to play maybe in your third or fourth gameplay (no really it's pretty hard).

Basically you need to play this game becuase of tentacles. Nah just kidding, as much as I love the odd mix of characters, there is so much more to offer from the game. A great addition of extra levels so you can do endless grinding in different settings. Also there are a lot of cameos from a favourite past characters from the series including everyone's favourite fallen angel Flonne. If you like the Prinnies, you get a lot of interaction and conversations and well what can I say the characters like to ship each other which makes all otaku's happy. Fenich and Lord Val FTW. A JRPG fan's must play game.

Review: Disgaea 5

Since it first arrived in 2003, the Disgaea series has established itself as a challenging and rewarding tactical role-playing game series with almost infinite replay value in it’s extra dungeons and enemies, making it a rare gem to play. Since then, the series has grown with new iterations across the PS2 and PS3, and more recently, remakes of the games for portable devices like the DS (Disgaea 1), PSP (Disgaea 1 & 2) and PS Vita (Disgaea 3 & 4).

Personally I believe the handheld porting was an excellent route for the Disgaea series due to the never ending grinding, I love the grinding, but this can be tedious when you die in the item world and lose all your progress, so why not have a quick stint on your commute to work?

The first characters we meet are Seraphina, the Overlord of her home netherworld, Gorgeous, and the mysterious wandering demon Killia, whom she finds in her path devouring a rare ramen dish as she’s about to be attacked by the enemy army. If you've played Disgaea before, you probably know that food is an important factor in the game to heal HP/TP.

So apart from Sera's obvious fan service we do get a lot of comedy from her arch enemy the Reg Magnus who turns out to be a big brute with a heart of gold, she just doesn't like to wash his pants.

The full review  is on Parallax Play. But I wanted to add some more points whilst I continue to play this game.

UPDATE

I thought I'd mention the changes in interrogation - in Disgaea 4 you would gain prisoners by throwing enemies into your base panel then speak with the Beast woman at your base. So I didn't use this feature much. In Disgaea 5 you have demons surrendering automatically so I ended up using the feature quite a bit. This time you speak to the blonde professor lady in your base and she gives you a list of prisoners with their gauges showing how much hostility they have against you. If they have none you can make them citizens straight away.

If they harbour a lot of 'Revenge' best to beat it out of them, though you have to figure out whether it's through beating, specials or starvation.

Fusion  is much more handy in the game where if you have an army of prinnies you can fuse to make a stronger character on the battle field similar to Reg Magus using his overkill to grow large.

Reztron: secret boat party

REZtron have always been my favourites in way of events they rep the under appreciated Sega consoles of which I am a loyal fan of.

Past events have included silent disco at Clapham, free food at Hoxton alongside our favourite retro game classics playable.

There newest concept brought all the different aspects together on a beautiful yacht. Not just say yacht but the one docked at the Excel center.

You came to the fifth floor past the glamorous chandeliers and smartly dressed staff to another world. Upon entering you pick up your headsets with two stations: 90's cheese and game tunes. Now your kitted out it is time to game!

REZtron had several consoles set up including: Sega megadrive, dreamcast, Saturn and CD. If that didnt take your fancy why not enjoy the ambience on thr balcony whilst looking over the London view.

People weren't afraid to dance and game competitively. The sonic speed run held great banter between casual and hardcore gamers. Everything was tied up with a Hawaiian bow.

Great new concept from REZtron, for more events follow them on fb and their website.

Nineworlds: Gaming beyond the West - live blogging

It was refreshing to see perspectives into characterisation in gaming in regards to diversity.

The majority of games protagonists follow the majority be it caucasian or Japanese looking characters.

We only have the power to bring diversity in our own customisable avatars in mmo games and some free roam rpgs. As it has bern argued that in for example a female protagonist in Assassin's Creed unity was too hatd to animate yet using one in a previous gane in the series, it is hard to understand the challenges or prejudices.

As technolgy has developed and we have photo close graphics - minotitirs are bring noticed as not being accurate or used at all. This would not have bern a problem in gamrs like ping pong or tetris.

Mobile games are easier to market snd highly profitable as they use fruit, animals instead of humans as candy crush or bejewelled do mot offemd people and therefore easy to localise.

Games also reflect popular culture and different mediums such as movies, books etc so as pop culture chamges, games hopefully chanfe alongside it aswell.

It is always interesting to look into historical accuracy in games which Taren Matharu (author of Summoner - the novice) went into detail such as world war 2 games with the high statistics of black amd south Asian soldiers where none are shown. Not even a mention or reference to a name, it is alk predominantly American with a few British. Proportions are not correct but is it fair?

The game Sunset by Telltale games follows a black house keeper of a dictator in 1970. Commercially it didnt make a lot of money but with their own miney from previous successful titles they made the game with their own free reign. Crowdfounder and kickstarter campaigns help gauge interest and support independent game studios yo make unique games.

Never Alone proves cultured games with diversity have appeal to the worldwide audience. It has stiries based in the north pole from eskimos and give us an insight which was the aim to be educational and proves to demonstrate so.

Some of the recommendations from the panelists of a good representation of diversity in games are:

The Walking Dead
The last of us
Assassin's creed
Yukuza 3

Jamie Lee Curtis and family cosplayed as 'Street Fighter' characters to sneak into EVO

Jamie Lee Curtis a professed Street Fighter Fan

Famed Horror Actress from Halloween series, Jamie Lee Curtis, and her family cosplayed as characters from the popular fighting games Street Fighter and Tekken. Corpse Party: Blood Drive on Vita in EU for Halloween

Marvelous Europe announced today that ‘Corpse Party: Blood Drive’ for PlayStation Vita will release digitally and physically this Halloween and is available NOW to pre-order from the Marvelous Europe Store. Corpse Party features two physical editions priced at £44.99 & £29.99 and standard digital download from the PS Vita Store for £29.99.

 Pre order from www.corpseparty.eu

As people may have heard from my podcast Otaku Nation UK me and, Harriet and Alex had mixed opinions on the anime. The anime grossed out most people but I thought it was an exemplary for a shirt 13 series where the audeince is gripped and given a satisfactory ending. Nothing felt rushed in this anime where school kids open a dimensional portal in their schools past where they are sucked into torture and murder. The 13 episodes explained the schools grotesque past and characters given and spirits to the interesting connections. I didn't think twice to try out the remastered version on the game on PSP. It had the charm of old classic 2D RPG's but great story.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive is the final instalment of the Horror Adventure story that began with Corpse Party on PSP I played in 2010, followed by Corpse Party: Book of Shadows in 2013. Corpse Party: Blood Drive allows players to control both individuals and groups of characters as they explore the Heavenly Host Elementary school as well as other notable locations. The game features a top-down 3D perspective and tasks players with dodging, disarming, running, solving and interacting with the larger world in order to advance the plot and discover what lies at the core of the events happening at Heavenly Host Elementary.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive features a thrilling narrative and deep characters that the player must work with in order to survive the many trials and tribulations of Heavenly Host Elementary. Story points throughout the game are presented in graphic visual novel-style cutscenes, and the game features many endings based upon the tasks completed throughout the campaign.

"To be able to work with the developers of Corpse Party: Blood Drive and deliver something unique to the European market, while simultaneously expanding our portfolio is something that we are incredibly grateful for" commented Michael Fisher, Community Manager at Marvelous Europe. “We hope that people will find much to love in Corpse Party: Blood Drive whether it be the deep, rich narrative experience or nerve-racking gameplay that they face as they explore its dark world.”

Experience the world of Corpse Party in full 3D for the first time ever. All environments from the previous series entries have been meticulously re-created for this brand new instalment, and can be fully explored with an in-game flashlight precariously lighting the way.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive features far more ways for characters to fight back against the darkness inside Heavenly Host - Sprint in short bursts, disarm traps, hide and more in order to thwart your pursuers from reaching their goal.

3D binaural audio for simulated surround sound and screen-altering visual effects make their return for Corpse Party: Blood Drive, along with a whole host of extra unlockables such as Voice Actor Interviews, Art Stills, Music Tracks and more!

With 11 huge story chapters and 8 supplemental “Extra Chapters” there is plenty to explore in Corpse Party: Blood Drive, its story providing shocking twists and unbelievable turns as you unravel the mystery at the heart of it all.

Marvelous Europe also announced that they will be bringing Corpse Party: Blood Drive to their booth at Gamescom 2015, where you can have a hands on experience with the title contact, Sam at Decibel for an appointment.

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Review

Title: Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters
Publisher: Aksys Games
Developer: Arc System Works
Genre: Visual Novel,Puzzle, RPG
Platform(s): Vita, PS3
Release Date:10th Mar 2015 (USA) 13th Mar 2015 (UK/EU - NIS America)

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters is a visual novel that follows a group called the Gatekeepers who hold the facade of website of the occult and creepy but are actual mercenaries for hire to exorcise demons. You play the unknowing college student baffled by girls and already deemed a weirdo by the student council president an extreme hottie. When a fellow classmate in a wheelchair asks if you believe in ghosts things begin to unravel.

This game struck me a beautifully presented JRPG but coming from Arc Systems Works I knew there would be more tot his game than meets the eye. You are a generic guy but you enter all your stats at the begging ie name, star sign what club you want to join - I joined Tea because I loathe sports and so should my character but hey that doesn't affect the fact you are now a ghost hunter.

Me and not impressed student president are recruited by the Gatekeepers and Shindo shows us the ropes, since he is confined to his wheelchair he normally contacts us via walkie talkie while we do all the hard grafting. Once at the HQ you use the pc to see requests and pick which ever ones you like these vary in difficulty and maps.

Maps are important as you are introduced to a quirky shop owner who sells us items to help us on missions, the quicker we catch the demons the more bounty we receive. Certain items can be placed on the maps to prevent ghosts entering rooms or push them in a  certain direction for us to trap them in a corner.

These items can be household objects like table salt, ghosts cant walk over it and you have more complex traps that push the ghost away from you. But the layout of the room are important as any electricity sockets can move the ghosts around to other rooms which can be frustrating.

You have a certain amount of turns before you fail your mission, it's different for each map. Also you can bump into random demons as well as your primary target, the second you exterminate your mission is over.

You have advantages such as the cat Seecloar she can sense ghosts and also lights up areas at random. She sometimes comes on the map to help. depending on the equipment of your characters as default you have two teams with the EVP gear to sense ghosts nearby so the third team you need to save up money for to get it as you have time constraints and running around in circles is not an option. Shindo from time to time gives clues to where the ghosts are hiding in certain areas or near certain items.

The visual novel aspect is beautifully done, you have seamless cut scenes that morph into an almost 3D dimension feel and you can re watch the sequences in the scrap book at the HQ. Sometimes you are faced with decisions and this is the confusing part, you are given the icons: mouth, ear, hand, nose. I automatically thought mouth was to talk- apparently not my character within the first five minutes of the game tries to snog the student president. Awkward. This probably the only thing that lets the game down no quick tutorial in game or instruction Manuel of how to use the icons. I don't think these decisions really change the game but affect the script but otherwise you follow the story in a  linear fashion.

Other things you can get up to in the HQ include mini games if you fancy a break from the ghost hunting and main story. Also when you leave for a mission you get to select tracks to listen to in the car and on the mission. A lot of details has been put into making this game a great experience. i worry about playing it whilst travelling as I can get very immersed and miss my stop.

As a horror fan I really enjoyed the ghost aspect of the game, you get a loose story about each ghost and the art compliments it so well. the level of artistry used to do the movie sequences makes it feel like your part of a movie. Apart from the lack of instructions on how to manovere the emoticons, a sold game with great soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu famed for Final Fantasy.

Definitely a 4 and a half out of 5 I loved freaking out the girls in this game, makes it more entertaining.
More info on the game on the Official NISA website and listen to the awesome soundtrack there too.

EGX Rezzed at Tobacco Dock 2015

Avid gamers were given a new event and venue for 2015 after many years of Eurogamer homed at Earl's Court, since the closing down of the venue - Eurogamer moved and a the small EGX Rezzed came to Tobacco Dock.

I was pleasantly surprised with firstly the area - the venue is situated between Shadwell and Whitechapel and in a very different kind of venue. The Venue was split into a large courtyard with lots of medium sized room and corridors like a maze. Each room had a sign indicating the type sof games and the press, toilets and information areas were on the basement floor.

I mentioned before about trying out Friendship Club, that was located in the first Indie room and it sure was a lot of fun. To make the most of the Mexican shootout and other modes play with 2-4 players where you use your heads to headbutt or dodge. This pop-art looking fighting game holds alot of entertainment.

A game I played at random for it's slick cover art was Ragnorok - baseds on Nordic myth, the game is set before the apocalypse and the world is slowly changing. Using the Oculus Rift you walk around the barren wilderness, as you pass spikes coming from the ground you follow a Sasquatch running into a cave there you come across a wolf - here begins your journey. This is more of an experience than game you feel the atmosphere and surrounding. Turning left and right to see or using the analogue pads also.
Adventure box was a great game for RPG fans were you are in a minecraft sort of world but instead of spending a week to make a house, you insert premade houses and use the week to make a city instead. You can customise characters and also add story. Once your RPG is complete using a link you can invite your friends to enter the world you created. This game is used on the internet browser so your friends don't even have to own the game to play in your world.

Sir Terry Pratchett takes Death’s arm...

“It is said that your life flashes before your eyes just before you die. That is true, it's called Life.”
― Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent

Sir Terry Pratchett, renowned fantasy writer for cult classics such as the Discworld series dies aged 66 on 12th march 2015, eight years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

"The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds," said Larry Finlay of his publishers Transworld. The author died at home, surrounded by his family, "with his cat sleeping on his bed", he added.

Fellow author and friend Neil Gaiman was among those paying tribute to Sir Terry: "There was nobody like him. I was fortunate to have written a book with him, when we were younger, which taught me so much."

I found my way into Discworld by playing the Sega Saturn game version in 1995 featuring the famous voice Eric Idle as the protagonist Rincewind the Wizard. This was my first third person point and click game which was odd for a console as it's a bog standard format for the PC. I was charmed by the wit of Rincewind and the concept of Death tagging along with his walking chest with many dolls legs.

The Discworld series - which started in 1983 - was focused around a flat world perched on the backs of four elephants which rested on the back of a giant turtle. If you got to the edge of the world you were simply going to fall off

At the turn of the century, he was Britain's second most-read author, beaten only by JK Rowling.

It was in August 2007, Sir Terry had suffered a stroke, but the following December he was diagnosed with a very rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's disease which, he said, "lay behind this year's phantom stroke". The writer has wrote more than 70 books during his career and completed his final book last summer.

His daughter Rhianna Pratchett is a video game writer and has worked on acclaimed titles such as Tomb Raider (2013), Heavenly Sword, Overlord, and Mirror's Edge

Friendship Club at Rezzed

In the lead up to Rezzed this week 12-15 March I am getting wind of lots of games showcasing and this one took my interest as it's been described as a blend of Psychonauts and Fight club

So the background of Friendship Club (full title "Timmy Bibble's Friendship Club") was initially developed in 24 hours at the TIGA Game Hack in November 2013. It won the jam, receiving the "Best Game" award.

The project lay dormant for a few months until a week before GEEK 2014. . At GEEK 2014, it was awarded the "People's Choice Indie Award". Hooray! I do love seeing these on the spot game Jams -which pave the way for new ideas and a platform to launch them too.

Story

At its heart it's a very fast paced, frenetic action game, where rounds can last anywhere between zero and five seconds. Levels are procedurally generated and bullets bounce forever, so you have to use varying strategies and tactics to overcome your opponents.

Combatants include 'Old Man Ricketts' a prospector driven mad by his lust for gold, 'Shakey Jake' a ninja bandit skeleton, 'Chud' a beast from the mountains and 'The Carnardinal' a duck from the Vatican.

Game Features

  • 2 - 4 Player Local Multiplayer
  • Get your friends together in the same room for the ultimate showdown!
  • A Multitude of Game Modes
  • Classic, Headbutt, Standoff, Bullet Hell, Trick Shot, Assassins, Turbo Bullets. More to come!
  • Procedural Level Generation
  • Each environment has its own set of procedural content rules, as well as its own gameplay elements built in to it. (Currently two environments). No match is ever the same! more to come!

Find a Melted Majora's Mask 3ds on eBay now!

One of the 'hottest' Nintendo products to fly off the shelf on February 13th this year was the glamorous gold Majora's Mask new 3DS. Release with limited edition Skull kid figure and new game pre loaded onto the machine.

Most Zelda fans would of been ecstatic to get their hands  limited edition Majora's Mask New 3DS but from reading this some people would rather have the satisfaction of trolling.

On  eBay a seller was found selling his Majora's Mask limited edition new 3dDS but not in mint condition. In the name of 'ART' he decided to melt the handheld in a microwave.

The best part he is now trying to sell the handheld on eBay for a ridiculous price of  $11,315. People can try to offer 'Best offer' but for some reason I don't think he will get much interest.  The seller's name is perfectlymadebirds, and the item is listed as “seller refurbished.”

The description for the item is:

“Working GOLD Nintendo 3DS was microwaved to NON-WORKING Order for purposes to CREATE ARTWORK using the microwaving process inside a fully customized microwaving robot shielded enclosure. 1200 Watts of microwaving power was used to microwave the device inside a 2.2 CUFT VINTAGE 1970S era Whirlpool Microwave BEAST.”

It includes a handmade toad with an eyeball, instruction manuel, box but unfortunately no power plug adapter - suprise suprise.

Joypad's #videogamedemocracy caused a stir at Boxpark

Shorditch is becoming the gaming hub of London - finding almost 2-3 gaming events every week now from Nintendo to Sega here is a non sponsored event to mix things up.

I was absolutely impressed with the equipment to put the #videogamedemocracy in to play. You had a large screen at the opposite end of the room (away from the consoles) attached to two sets of buttons which people need to tap continuously to make up numbers to win the vote. The large screen had two games to choose from.

Upon entering I asked how it went and I was just in time for a vote and 20 people ran across the room and button bashed like there lives depended on it. This consisted of perseverance and real passion! I absolutely loved the comradely - no trash talk - all friendly banter - the best part were a lot of the people had just met each there today.

I had a chat with a couple of people at the event some came alone some came in groups - Anders said he came to a previous event and invited friends this time around to come along and they all made circuits around the many consoles to play a bit of everything.

Every 15 minutes the vote began for a new game on different consoles, people were given wristbands after paying entry and were allowed in and out of the tent to smoke, bring food and drinks. The audience were a mix of people who came straight from work in suits and younger with 50/50 ratio of Male and Female.

Joypad is run by George Swain and Matt Farthing. Their next event will be the Official EGX Rezzed Afterparty at the Pickle Factory.

Like Joypad on Facebook for more calendar events they organise or to book for events :-)

Retztron Back at the Hoxton Pony!

It's been almost 4 months since I attended my last Reztron event - why? That's because they have a new venue for Saturdays so the Thursday events were on hold. Since they returned to the delightful Hoxton Pony in the heart of Shorditch.

I absolutely love their events purely becuase they are dedicated to Sega consoles. This includes: Megadrive, Saturn and Dreamcast

All the consoles were available to play at our discretion, friendly competition was encouraged for fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, House of the Dead 2 and Virtual Fighter 2. They used various tricks to utilise the space properly including over head projects on the wall and even ceilings which kept the gamers entertained.

Another addition was the Hoxton Pony Thursdays were now being sponsored by restaurants with free food sampling - it was Mexican theme by Killer Tomato. So after some button bashing on Sonic you could indulge in some tacos and cheesy fahitas upstairs by the bar.

From about 8-10 the event was jam packed with people arriving from work for a game of Virtual Tennis and a round of Karaoke. Karaoke included 80's rock to 90's cheesy tunes on the easy to use machine.

See more of my photos here. Follow me on Twitter for more event news.

Be sure to check out the official photos on their facebook page.

More events to be announced on twitter.
